Douglas Irvine

Douglas Irvine is a founding member, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Visible Fictions. For 21 years, this award-winning theatre company has presented its work across the UK, Ireland, Canada, Germany, Denmark, Australia and the USA – inspiring children, young people and adults alike.

Under Douglas’ leadership, both national and international partnerships have been at the heart of the company’s work, with co-productions and collaborations being formed with a range of arts organisations including: The Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, BBC Scotland, Scottish Opera, The Traverse and CTC in Minneapolis. He has also worked as an actor, tutor and director with other companies including the BBC, Citizens Theatre, Oran Mor, TAG, Scottish Youth Theatre, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow University and Strathclyde University.

Douglas also led on the creation of a groundbreaking education and participation department within the company. Through its close collaboration with agencies and partners such as the Scottish Prison Service, Learning Teaching Scotland, and National Galleries of Scotland it has initiated a wide range of work engaging young offenders, schools, and communities across Scotland. Recently the company led a European youth exchange with youth theatres from Scotland, Spain, Italy and Germany.
Douglas is a former board director of the Federation of Scottish Theatre and currently sits on the board of Puppet Animation Scotland, the US based organisation International Performing Arts for Youth (IPAY), and also sits on the management group of the Scottish Drama Training Network.
